My students need high interest texts for literature circles based around the themes of diversity, acceptance, and social justice with multi-cultural characters.
Our elementary school is a wonderfully diverse Title I elementary school just outside of San Francisco. My classroom is composed of 80% English Learners, with students from El Salvador, China, the Philippines, Mexico, and Dubai. Our school is a low income Title I school with 65% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. We have amazing and positive students who work extremely hard.
Because our students are low-income, we do not get many donations for our classrooms, so donations from DonorsChoose.org are very important for our students to get the supplies and experiences that other students would normally receive.
My Project
I will be using this project to request small group sets of texts for literature circles. As we are learning comprehension strategies in class, the students need to practice applying these strategies to high interest, authentic texts. By providing a variety of books, the students will be able to choose what the want to read, increasing their motivation.
Working in literature circles encourages independence and allows the students to take ownership over their learning.
Having the students work in small groups promotes discourse and also gives me the opportunity to differentiate my teaching based on the small group's needs.
I am choosing texts that relate to our social studies curriculum as well as high interest novels around the themes of diversity, acceptance, and social justice with multi-cultural characters.
