My students need Literature Circle books; Cry the Beloved Country, Joy Luck Club, Fahrenheit 45, 1984, the Knife of Never Letting Go series. Thank you!
I want to see my students reading books, great books, for at least 30 minutes each day. Together we read, discuss, and analyze great literature. This helps the students better prepare for high school and the difficult transition to a big school environment.
My students are strong readers with a passion to learn for themselves.
Our school works with each student to develop an individual learning plan based on their specific needs and learning styles. Using Literature Circles, I can make sure all of my students find a book they love to read and develop a love of reading as well.
Many of my students come from homes that have suffered or are dealing with trauma. Having a good book to dig into in class helps them escape that story for a bit and enter someone else's life.
My Project
My students will choose one of the Literature Circle books for their Global Realistic Fiction unit. Then I will create a small group for them to discuss and analyze at their reading level. Having a variety of options available to the students helps them choose a book that is a best fit for them and their reading needs.
My 7th grade readers will learn the elements of realistic fiction and then write their own story. The 8th graders work on analyzing the literature and writing an essay about character development. Both classes work diligently to better understand the genre of reading and develop as a writer.
These donations allow each student to choose a book that interests them.
With additional copies of each book, I can make sure that any student wanting to read challenging literature has the option to do so and will be better prepared for high school. Critical thinking and analysis are essential skills in today's society and the donation of a few classic books will help us practice those skills throughout the unit.
