My Students

My students are such a wonderful group of hard working and motivated fifth graders. Their interests vary from loving to learn about the different ecosystems in science class to working on extremely challenging math problems or working on high level reading comprehension skills!

No matter what their academic level is, all of my students work to challenge themselves!

It is so exciting to watch the high achievers gain knowledge that is beyond comprehension for a 10 year old! It is even more motivating to see a struggling learner determined to solve problems of a difficult level because they also want to "accept" a challenge and succeed.

My Project

The novel A Tangle of Knots is written from multiple viewpoints which enable students to understand others' points of view. This novel provides opportunities for students to focus on higher order thinking, such as inferring and vocabulary that many 5th graders need to be exposed to. As we read this novel together, students will strengthen their reading and writing skills by responding to challenging questions in their writing journals. Two topics of the novel are identity and ability, which lead students to discover challenging themes they can apply to their lives. This ties into our social justice unit that will be incorporated into our classroom throughout the school year.
