Literature and the Arts Integrated

Help me give my students the opportunity to combine art and literature! We read the book Lunch Money by Andrew Clements and then take time to make potholders just like the innovative young business woman in the story!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Torma's classroom raised $680

My Project

One of the novels we read in our class is Lunch Money by Andrew Clements. In this book the students are competitive young business owners. One of them makes and sells potholders.

This year I would love to integrate the arts with this reading experience and pause to make our own potholders in class using these looms and loops.

Students will be able to visualize what the character made, and better understand the amount of time and work that she put into her business venture.

We also will integrate our mathematics unit on the coordinate plane as we create and design patterns can be be made on a geometric grid. Students will work in groups to plan out designs and then figure out how they can bring them to fruition on their looms.

Finally, we will culminate our unit by determining a fair price and selling our potholders to raise funds for a classroom celebration, so we can explore the study of economics.
