My students need an assortment of Kindergarten through 2nd grade books on CD for our Listening Center to improve literacy. This includes From Seed to Plant, The Pumpkin Book, and Frog and Toad.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I have 12 boys and 7 girls in my class. They are enthusiastic and active and need a variety of ways to experience reading to keep them engaged and interested.

Ninety-five percent of my students are African-American.

Our school has an extended school day and emphasizes martial arts. Our school also emphasizes knowledge, strength and values as part of our charter. We have small class sizes and can give students more individual instruction.

My Project

We will use the books on CD with our new Listening Center. This will allow me to accommodate my visual and auditory learners. The books are often read by well-known actors and have music that help engage and hold the student's interest as they listen.

Listening to books on CD will give students an excellent model for reading and will help improve fluency and comprehension as well.

This will also allow me to give my students the opportunity to listen to books above their reading level.
