My Students

"An activity becomes creative when the doer cares about doing it right, or better." John Updike My students are eager to explore science concepts through words. Science literature helps students to connect what they learn in school to the real world. These connections make learning meaningful.

I teach science in South Carolina to a group of students who are eager to learn new skills daily.

Their joy for learning is seen through their creative projects, intellectual conversations and debates, and their excitement during lessons and activities. Although this can be seen during instruction in all subjects, it can especially be seen during reading. They love to take off their shoes and immerse themselves in a great book. I teach at a school where literacy and reading is highly valued. We use the Accelerated Reading Program to motivate students to read and comprehend what they are reading daily. Competition to earn the most points is at an all time high. By far, reading is their favorite subject and the best performance area. Despite the achievement in reading, my students struggle with science. Science achievement is not where it should be. Thus, my students need non-fiction science literature that will help them overcome their deficiencies.

My Project

As the world continues to evolve, it is vital that students have a strong foundation in math, science, and technology. In fact, one of my school's goals is to increase students' interests in STEM education. In order to do this, my students must have many opportunities to learn about STEM concepts. While it is important to participate in hands-on activities, it is equally important for students to have adequate background knowledge in these areas. I am requesting non-fiction books that focus on a variety of science concepts related to STEM education. These concepts include physical and earth science, astronomy, light, and sound. Additionally, I am requesting file folder games so that students can practice the skills that they have learned through reading and hands-on activities. My goal is to integrate reading with STEM concepts. By doing so, students will have more opportunities to make connections and master the content. This level of engagement leads to success.

Donations to this request are investments that will impact my students for a lifetime.

Students will understand that there is a direct relationship between reading and science. Not only will students practice science skills, but they will see that there is more to science than what takes place in the classroom. Through literature, students will see the everyday application of science skills.
