My students need a shelving unit, baskets, and books to inspire our social-emotional growth as well as our academic growth. A good book provides a starting point for deep discussions and insights into life and the world around us.
Our students are in a geographically challenged area of Oahu.
Approximately 80% are on free and reduced lunch.
Many of them struggle academically, but have a willingness to learn. Given the chance, these students work hard to reach their goals.
Our remote location often means these students miss out on opportunities to experience the larger world around them. We try to take them on field trips and bring experiences into the classroom through technology, but these experiences are not enough.
My Project
A good book is a window to larger world.
A great book can inspire thoughts, discussions, and insights.
Our classroom library is a place for students to find a great book that will both further a love for reading and insight into our world. Of course, all libraries need book bins and shelves to display our amazing books.
In our classroom, books give us a window to the world and into human nature. I have chosen books for specific themes (empathy, activism, hope, perseverance, and kindness) and to practice academic, critical-thinking skills. Something Beautiful encourages hope and activism. Colour of Home gives insight and encourages empathy for refugees (a wide-spread crisis in the world today). These books spark discussions and deeper understandings of our world. Critical thinkers make connections to their own lives and the book themes become life-changing. It all starts with a good book.
