My Students

Engaged, excited, and enthusiastic. My students all attend this school because they want to. Each of them have a desire to make their lives better, and to improve the world around them. They show compassion towards one another, and care deeply about their community. Inside and outside of the school they are leaders and the innovators of tomorrow. When faced with challenges they put on their thinking caps and forge onward.

My students are focused on solving problems that happen in the real world.

Through project based learning and a focus on STEM concepts they learn to be the future leaders of the world. Some of them, however, simply don't know where to start. Limited experiences can hamper a student's ability to effect change because they simply do not have enough experience to see where they can make change.

My Project

My students are engaged and high tech learners. As a one-to-one technology school they interact with a lot of text on their screens. I've always found their is something missing through, and have killed more than a few trees providing them with more text than what they can get off of the computer screen.

Scholastic Storyworks blends what is best about technology education with the power of the physical printed word.

Each student gets a physical magazine to hold in their hand. Because it is theirs they can mark it up to their hearts content and not have to worry about returning the resource in the end. As a companion they have access to Storyworks online elements which allow them to gain a deeper understanding of vocabulary, and see videos that relate to what they are reading about.

Storyworks is current in a way that it is difficult for books to be. It provides current event stories that help connect students to the world. It also builds a bridge between my students and the past through interactive dramas and non-fiction texts. They latch onto text that is truly written for them, and even my lowest students will do just about anything they can to understand what they are reading when they see how much their peers are enjoying their magazines.

With writing assignments that are tied to reading my students are engaged with text in ways that require them to be more than just readers. They have to create meaning from what they read and share it out also. The authentic link between reading and writing builds their abilities in both simultaneously.
