My students need a printer, monitor, 2 flip video camcorders, and speakers to have the opportunity to express their knowledge and understanding of literature through technology, and with their own voice and ideas.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students today live in a world we could only dream of. Technology is one of the keys to opening their minds to the idea of literature having relevance in their lives today. By having tools available, they can learn and achieve and dream.
My students live primarily in housing projects and all live in poverty.
However, they are inquisitive, imaginative and bright. They are only limited by their access to education and resources. Though they do live in one of the most impoverished areas in California, they still see the world as an adventure in possibilities. Unfortunately, many have had horrors and disappointments in their lives. School is a place we wish to make their safe place and a harbor of dreams waiting to be fulfilled. They often feel forgotten, but they also know their teachers care for them and will continue to work for them and with them to make their futures as bright as possible.
My Project
My students love to express themselves. They thrive on pictures and media and interactivity. I want my students to learn to present themselves in the most positive manner and through technology they all have a chance to show what they are made of. Put a camcorder in the hands of a student who has trouble sitting still and a Spielberg emerges! Allow them to hold a microphone and read their poems aloud and the class is suddenly a Slam Poetry Club. Give them an opportunity to create drawings and collages and print them out and share with their classmates, family and entire school and they become artists, not just students being forced to study Hamlet. They become Hamlet and Ophelia and Shakespeare as scripts are written with joy instead of dread and once they are filmed they become a film festival. This is vital to their understanding of literature, literary devices and even grammar and I want this for them. This is the 21st Century and they need technology to reach their full potential.
My students do not have access in their homes to much technology and yet the world we live in requires they have a strong knowledge of it to succeed.
I want to send them off to high school with 21st Century skills that will keep them interested in their own learning and education. WIth the high school graduation so dismal, it is imperative we inspire our students and keep them engaged. We will all benefit from their learning and talent.
