This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are one big, happy family. Our Title I school is home to a large population (92%) of English language learners. My students face many challenges while living in a new country and attempting to learn a new language.
My three classes are filled with 75 eager students who love working together to complete various tasks.
My goal is to make their transition as smooth as possible in hopes of preparing them for great achievement. They are capable of greatness and will achieve.
My Project
A way to escape your current situation is to get lost in a good book. What a great feeling it is to have something of your very own. A book is many things: a friend, a problem solver, an escape, a rescuer, and a lifesaver. The books selected have characters who have faced challenges and have overcome their circumstances as well as books to assist with strategies to use interventions for struggling readers.
Research shows that when children become homeless, they face educational setbacks.
Homelessness has an impact on children's literary experiences, understandings, and background knowledge. Researcher Palakow (2007)," advocated taking time to understand students and their hardships. Perhaps students come to school upset by the chaos in their lives and need a space in the classroom to decompress. It would benefit them to be able to sit alone at the start of the day to read their favorite book or write in a personal journal".
