Literacy to Support Math Concepts

My students need literacy connections to their math concepts. The Stuart Murphy Math Starts collections help to connect Common Core Standards to stories that give evidence to characters using math to solve everyday problems.

My Students

My students come from a wide range of social, cultural and academic backgrounds. Although our school has a history of providing education for the children of the remote and rural McElmo Canyon as well as children from the neighboring Navajo Reservation, we have begun to attract students from town who have chosen a less traditional setting.

Many of our students come from low income families and 90 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

We strive to create an environment that provides them with opportunities they many not have at home or at other traditional schools.

As mentioned above, our school is located in a canyon surrounded by farms and ranches. Originally a one room school house, we have grown to include 2 portable classrooms and now serve a total of about 50 students, grades k-6. We offer an education that is hands-on and personalized, integrating the natural environment in an outdoor classroom setting.

My Project

We strive to use literacy across all curriculum. With technology taking over the home entertainment, children are not read to at home as often as they once were. As a result, illiteracy is becoming a bigger problem, especially in areas of higher poverty.

Children love to be read to.

Listening to great pieces of literature supports their ability to become better readers and writers, helping them understand and master challenging and difficult concepts.

I hope to enrich my student's learning through story-telling and make math concepts that are sometimes difficult to grasp, clearer and easier to understand.

Through the purchase of these books, students at Battle Rock will enjoy mathematical stories for years to come!
