My students need a cover for our classroom Macbook; Final Cut Pro to edit their life stories; and markers to illustrate their own storybooks.
" Every great story deserves embellishment." ~J.R. Tolkien Storytelling is part of every culture's fabric. Great story tellers know how to engage and keep their audience and my students have GREAT stories to tell. We are a classroom where multiple languages, cultures, and histories merge into one
Every culture has rich stories embedded in them.
Children, no matter age or language, love to hear a great story. My ELL students are no different. They struggle every day to understand a new language in a new country as they move through their academic day. In English/reading class, where we are constantly learning language, they practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Still the struggle is there. I have found by using alternative methods of communication, they become more engaged and just as lively as their peers when trying to share information about themselves. Our school is widely diverse and no two stories are identical, yet we find that human connection through storytelling
My students' frustration of not being able to fully express themselves is always present when they cannot locate the words/phrases they need to share their stories or participate in class. However, the idea of using videos designed, edited, and produced by the students themselves with Final Cut on our classroom Macbook and iPads, has created a fever pitch in our English and reading classrooms. Students who couldn't share their life story before, are excited at the prospect of being able to film themselves, narrate, and even illustrate their own digital storybook. Students will create a storyboard of their life, use a video camera, handmade drawings, iPhoto, and Final Cut to produce videos about themselves. Because they love using technology, even the most reluctant student will be engaged and produce authentic work about a topic they know very well-themselves. I am requesting a cover for our classroom Macbook; a copy of Final Cut Pro; and markers.
Learning to tell a great story takes time and practice.
My ELL students want to share their stories, but that communication gap is always present. Frustration is evident when they cannot locate the words/phrases they need to share their stories. Being able to create, illustrate, edit, and produce a video about their lives will help to create strong and independent learners who are actively engaged in their own learning, rather than passively sitting through their own education.Read More
