Every day, I have the great pleasure of teaching 16 1st Grade students. Those students are eager to learn and explore the world around them. I teach at a public Title 1 school in a rural area that provides education for students kindergarten to fifth grade. My students come from many different backgrounds, which sometimes makes it difficult for students to be exposed to grade-level content at home. Most of my students come from hardworking mid to low socioeconomic families. Half of my current students come from homes that are unable to provide basic supplies and are a part of our County Weekend Backpack Program.
Dramatic play centers are essential for young learners to develop literacy skills along with oral language skills. Dramatic play also helps to increase reading comprehension which in turn gives them a deeper understanding of the narrative structure and character motivations found in stories. Furthermore, by acting out certain scenarios and asking and answering questions orally, students learn proper social etiquette and skills.
Additionally, students benefit from imaginary play because it allows them to express their emotions and feelings in a nonjudgmental way along with being exposed to a functional print.
With this dramatic play area my students will be able to apply newly taught ideas and skills into imaginary scenarios along with learning to better cooperate with each other.
