My students need a ready-to-go listening center to help them with understanding fluent literacy skills and to allow struggling readers to utilize grade level reading materials.
A typical day in 2nd grade is full of laughter and joy. 2nd graders are full of life and they hunger for learning. Much learning comes through literacy and it is important that all students are provided the opportunity to become fluent readers.
My students absolutely love learning through books.
Books take them to places they may not every have the opportunity of experiencing in real life.
My students attend a high poverty public school in Montana. Many of them do not have the opportunity to listen to someone read to them outside of the school setting. My struggling readers tend to shy away from reading on their own and until they gain confidence in their reading abilities, they do much of their learning through listening.
My Project
Every week my students go to literacy centers during our reading block. During the centers, the students are required to utilize their reading skills to perform the tasks. For struggling readers this can create some anxiety as it is challenging for them to read independently. My desire is to have a ready-to-go listening center where the students can relax and enjoy reading as they read along with the narrative. This will allow them to hear fluent reading and gain confidence in themselves in a safe environment.
Donations to this project will ensure that my students will be able to enjoy a beautiful listening center that I would not be able to provide using my own resources.
Through this listening center, my students will improve their reading literacy, enjoy reading, and gain confidence in their reading abilities.
