My students need this Chromebook to practice assistive technology skills to practice reading and writing skills using the Braille displays. This will help them to improve their literacy skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students have visual impairments, and some of them have additional disabilities. All of my students have been struggling with reading due to lack of Braille skills. Some of them started learning braille because of their decreasing vision, and some of them may require additional assistance although they have been blind since birth.
The Literacy has been very important for them.
Learning to read and write Braille takes lots of practices and different strategies. It is critical that they all need to know how to read and write in Braille. The literacy can be nothing without learning the braille.
Having this chromebook will allow my visually impaired students to practice the literacy and assitive technology skills together. These skills are so critical sets of the skills under the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) skills. The ECC skills are the vision specific skills that my students need to be taught in order to be independent in the sighted world. In another word, the visually impauired student do not have incidental learning.
The Chromebook has accessibility features such as large print, touch screen, and voice output that my students are able to navigate with the Braille displays.
The students have to have proficient braille skills in order to use the Braille display. At the same time, they also have to know how to navigate the Chromebook using the accessibility feature.
Also, this Chromebook has a touch screen feature that my low vision students can use without using the mouse. Sometimes, it is so difficult for my low vision students to use the mouse due to the problems with the eye-hand coordination.
The Chromebook will allow my visually impaired students to do some research and complete their assignments in other academic classes. Assistive technology has allowed them to gain information and resources that they need to access the general education curriculum.
