My students need art supplies to express themselves creatively in ELA. Some supplies needed are paper, pencils, markers, collage materials, tissue paper and scissors.
My students are 8th Grade special education students. They work hard every day to achieve their goals and succeed in school. Reading complex tasks, citing evidence and expressing themselves in writing is difficult, yet they persevere and try their best.
My 8th grade special education students follow the general education curriculum of 8th grade students across NY state.
They do not quit, because they are motivated to succeed. Some days as a class we need to break from the traditional and assess their learning through arts instead of writing. My students live in a high poverty area and or school receives Title I funding. I can not ask them to supply extra materials for artistic projects.
My Project
I would like to channel literacy through art. Once a week I would like to assess my students comprehension of what they have read and written about during the course of the week through an art project. Students will create an artistic representation to answer an assessment question based on our current novel studies. The students will be able to create a drawing, collage, song, poem, skit, etc.
We need supplies to color their world and our classroom with their great work. Reading and writing, citing evidence and analyzing text are important parts of literacy. Expressing what they have learned through other mediums is also important to inspire my 8th grade special education students.
My project will inspire my students to persevere all week long, even when the work is difficult, by giving them something to look forward to on our artistic and expressive fun Friday class.
With supplies like paper, pencils, markers, collage materials, tissue paper and scissors we can display our students work, both written and artistic. Yes, their writing assignments and essays will still be displayed, but I would like to display their other talents as well.
