Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Reading matters when the characters are relevant and meaningful to the reader! Most of the "classic" books do not always appeal to my students. My students simply have a harder time connecting to works like Beowulf, Romeo and Juliet, and the Great Gatsby than they do with books that have a diverse character list and events that speak to my students on a deep, personal level.

In order for my students to go deep they must have access to novels that mean something to them.

Unfortunately, we teachers do not always have the funding for or said access to books that incorporate story lines and characters that my students will be able to identify with. Over 90% of my students are students of color. It is my hope that they will be able to find themselves in the books I teach this year. These students are bright, optimistic, and soon-to-be global leaders. Please help them in their journey!

My Project

My students desire novels that speak to their lives and journeys. Books that matter to them and can give them a new perspective on something that is relevant to their own lives.

We all need inspiration from time to time--and I know these books will give my students just that!

I truly believe these books will impact them academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. This project can help continue their already growing love for reading!

With this project the students will finally be able to take books HOME and potentially even find a piece of home in these novels. Their experience with these novels will be timeless!
