Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in Richmond, California. The majority of my students receive free lunch and come from lower SES families. These students face many challenges in their daily lives and I often have to compete with those challenges to make school interesting and motivating. One of the most challenging parts of teaching is providing students with activities that provide practice of learned skills and are fun and motivating. Practice of learned concepts is critical to retaining knowledge and building on their learning. I care deeply about my students and I have very high expectations for their academic abilities. These students work very hard all day long. I am asking for some literacy tasks that the students will be excited to use and will keep them motivated even when they are struggling.
The literacy tasks would be used by all my students. There are three levels, emergent, early, and transitional. Each level has hands on literacy tasks where the students are using their knowledge of letter sounds and spellings to complete tasks that are fun and motivating. They are getting valuable practice at the concepts we have learned in class. Because the tasks are leveled it will allow students to work on concepts that they need to practice to master, as well as, concepts that are challenging for them. The activities will help me differentiate learning in my class so that the students that are behind are getting important repetition with the skills they struggle with and the students that are ahead are being challenged to learn more.
These literacy tasks will be a great tool in my class and they will be fun and motivating for the students. They will be used daily during centers time and the students will be able to access them when they have finished other projects early.
