Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am seeking funding for "How Do You Feel Today?" emotional identification charts for Special Education students. I am a Special Education 7/8 grade teacher in East Harlem. Many of my students have difficulties identifying their feelings. This becomes especially important during literacy lessons where identifying a character's motives, an author's tone, or making personal connections to text requires prior knowledge of emotions. Very often when I ask a child,"How did you feel when ______ happened to you?," the answer is, "I don't know." "How Do You Feel Today?" charts display varying facial expressions and list the emotion associated with the picture. This technique is helpful to give students the language needed to verbalize their feelings and relate to others. Sympathy and empathy are virtues that I aim to instill within the classroom on a daily basis. When a student is displaying a particular emotion (through facial expressions or body language) needing special consideration, I ask classmates to be considerate. This is often difficult for some students. Reading facial expressions and body language is an important life skill and needs to be practiced with Special Needs students. Whether dealing with literature or life, all children need to be self-aware before they are able to become aware of others' needs. Thank you for supplying the charts that will foster emotional awareness; enriching connections to literature, and peer relations for my students.
