Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ecuador, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Senegal, Burkina Faso. These are just a few of the countries that are a part of our 5th grade community that makes our school that much more incredible.
Our students are empathetic, driven, and critical to analyze the world around them.
With a curriculum focused on human rights, students are proud to share their strong opinions, and quick to stand up for a friend or community in need. Whether it's sending Christmas cards to a child with cancer, or selling bracelets to raise funds for Puerto Rico, these students know what they want, and they take immediate actions to accomplish their goals.
My Project
In 2018, my students need access to reliable and authentic technology to better engage them in curricula. For students struggling with reading, the sheer act of opening a book independently can be daunting. But with the assistance of technology, the act of reading along with an audiobook can not only boost self esteem and independence, but can also serve as a means to get students excited about literacy.
Additionally, technology can enable my students to flip the script, switching roles from consumer to producer.
While reading materials connected to a curriculum focused on human rights, students can move towards action and activism in response to their findings. After reading numerous sources and exploring prominent historical figures and salient events during the Civil Rights Movement, students can use new technology to not only document these stories, but also weave in their own. With a goal of learning from historical stories and incorporating themes and lessons into their personal stories, students can use new tables to not only record themselves, but also upload photographs and artifacts to supplement their storytelling.
