Literacy: Storytelling for the 21st Century Kid Part II
My students need a complete set of literature-based phonemic awareness activity stations, wireless headphones for our SMART Board, 10 whiteboard erasers, word wands and 6 storage boxes.
Help educate the citizens of tomorrow! Our school is a Title 1 school, which means we have a large population of economically disadvantaged students. Many of my students lack support from home and this limits their reading opportunities necessary for success.
My students attend a public fine arts academy in a downtown location.
I have a classroom full of hard-working students who are eager to enhance their reading abilities! They are energetic, eager to please and open to their educational experiences. Some of my students are often frustrated by the lack of educational opportunities available to them. Literacy opens the world for students who might never have experiences otherwise while creating life-long learners and aspiring citizens. My students' reading abilities range from pre-primer readers to highly advanced. Many of my students come from single-parent homes, a few are being raised by their grandparents and there are some in traditional type homes. Some of my students will be the first to graduate in their family. Research shows that success in high school and beyond, directly correlates with a student's success in first grade.
My Project
My students love technology! By providing them with wireless headphones to use, I will be able to connect old and new methods of engaging learners. I will be able to record myself reading stories for my students to use in stations. This will allow even my lowest readers to find reading success. They will use the word wands as they are reading to highlight known words. After they have heard the story, they will be able to work together and complete their literature-based phonemic awareness task such as making rhyming words, word families, sight words and more. This will add an enormous amount of meaning to their reading and strengthen their comprehension of the story. Students will use the new erasers as they complete a story-map of their story. The storage boxes will ensure that the materials are well taken care of. Collaboration is key. These literature-based phonemic awareness stations will support students' reading and social skills at the same time!
Mastering the art of reading is a life-long skill that will serve my students well into their futures.
Enjoying reading is a gateway to building life-long learners as well as productive citizens. These literature-based learning stations, wireless headphones, word wands, erasers and boxes will last for many years to come, allowing a wealth of students to benefit from your generosity! "It takes a village to raise a child...," so come be a part of our village!
