My classroom is a typical kindergarten class with students who learn in all different ways. During our 90-minute reading block students go to literacy-based stations. In the stations they can manipulate words and sounds to learn reading skills like blending and segmenting.
My kindergarten students are all eager learners and come from all different types of backgrounds.
Some students are learning letters and sounds and some are on to high frequency words. So there is a wide range of learners. And it's my job to meet all their needs!
In order to do so my students will be going to literacy-based stations throughout the classroom. Here they will work on manipulating letters/sounds to make new words, read the room to identify words of the week, practicing new high frequency words and, of course, doing independent reading practice.
My school is a lovely school in a wonderful town. The families that make up our school are so hard-working and loving. The students in my class end up being my family by the end of the year!
My Project
My classroom could use a laminator and pouches for several uses. The main reason would be to help preserve our classroom stations. Students are all between 5-6 years old. We all know how hard they are on things! If it doesn't get eaten, it gets bent, twisted and run through the ringer. If I were able to laminate more of the words, letters and supplies they used during literacy stations, it would last 500 times longer!!
The colored ink would help liven up the classroom stations. How BORING is black and white?! Having the colored ink allows me to print colorful activities for the students before I laminate them. We all know kids are drawn and stimulated by colorful objects.
This project will make a huge difference in how long my classroom literacy stations will last.
It'll also help by making boring black and white literacy stations come to life with COLOR! Literacy stations help build life-long readers. And we all know how important that is in today's world!
