Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Do you remember learning to read? I do. I read stories that were bland and frankly-boring all from a huge book I could barely lift. Well, that's not how it goes in our 1st and 2nd grade multi-age classroom. My students are learning to read from trade books picked to match their needs and interests.

These students are 1st and 2nd graders from a large urban area in Illinois.

The part of town they live in is known for illiteracy, high crime and low socio-economic status. These children come to school knowing only a few letters and barely know how to write. Their families are taxed by working multiple jobs just to get by, little to no transportation and an all around rough go of it. These families do their best to find time to support their children, when some themselves are struggling with literacy problems. Real books at home is very important. In some cases, this is the only "real" book in the home that a child can read. Through taking the King Series books home students will be able to share their reading successes with their loved ones.

My Project

This set of books will provide a leveled library for students to share books they can read with their families. They will receive individualized instruction with these books and then be allowed to take them home for the evening to read too, by or with their parents and family members! They will learn the importance of reading. They will learn how valuable reading is to a life. My hope is that I will create a group of life long learners and READERS! As students begin to share their reading experiences with those they love at home, maybe they will inspire those people to make time for reading daily. Hopefully, those are the experiences that will stay with the student as they grow up. I hope those experiences will be the touchstones of their young literate life and more will come as they grow as readers! The King Series books will be a key piece in this literacy development of the 1st and 2nd graders!

By helping support this project you will be supporting children learn to read.

Students will use these King Series books in order to learn how to read and more important learn to love reading.
