I have the most caring and creative group of third graders. Three years ago I had these students in Kindergarten and now we have been reunited. My mind is blown at how huge they all seem, but the hearts remain the same. They have so many interests from animals to travel to Legos and I love finding ways to engage them through those interests.
In our classroom, my students feel safe because they are loved, seen, heard and we value mistakes and taking chances.
For the last three years I have been a teacher that they could always come to - once my student, always my student, and the fact that we get to be together again is simply amazing. One thing that has not changed is that this group is filled with movers and shakers! They are much bigger and our room is much smaller but the laughter is just as loud!
My Project
These days my students are coming in with more and more personal baggage on their little shoulders and using literacy to help them navigate their feelings is a great way to support them academically and emotionally. I am hoping to raise funds for new seating in my class, a new "Social Emotional" Section of our classroom Library and a new "Share Chair" to highlight our emerging authors. It's important to have a special place where they can showcase their talents. My hope is by having a more vast selection of read-a-louds with a strong social emotional message I will help students that are dealing with pressing matters of intolerance, family issues, identity, friendship and more. While surrounding ourselves with rich literature it may also persuade students to take more risks in their personal narrative writing!
