I teach 9th-12th grade students on a variety of levels academically and socially/emotionally. They are imaginative, full of questions, and really thrive when they are active and engaged. In the current educational environment, it has been difficult to do more hands-on group work that allows them to think outside the box, but I have found that when we move out of our traditional desks, and even sit on the floor or stand in groups, their creative juices flow and they become more energized to learn.
My Project
Help me give my students alternative seating for collaboration and fun with literacy! In an article, “Elements of a Literacy-Rich 21st Century Classroom,” Erin Lynch states: “To support the instructional strategies, the classroom structure and environment have to transform.”
I want my students to be captivated with literacy in a setting that makes them comfortable and open.
As an educator, I need to continue to find ways for students to be energized to learn, and offering alternate learning spaces in my classroom would make a difference. Not all of my students need the same things or learn in the same ways. Over the years, whenever I have had any alternate seating, especially with students who struggle to read or find meaning in reading activities, I have seen a positive impact on learning.
I will facilitate literacy exploration with learning centers and activities that are appealing to all levels of readers. Students will have more choices, and as the teacher, I will be able to model positive practices in literacy by participating in the groups. The literacy-rich setting that we can create will be a tremendous transformation highlighting the importance of reading, writing, critical thinking, and communication.
