Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ninth grade students are special. They are transitioning to high school with a fresh start, the ability to make new impressions and a clean slate of academics! In my classroom, I am looking to keep things exciting and challenging in my classroom by providing them with learning experiences which challenge them both creatively and authentically.
The students in my classroom are 9th-grade transition students who are insightful and funny, and who ask for very little but give SO much!
I am looking to keep my classroom an environment where my students are presented with a comfortable environment (literally and figuratively) in which to learn about life and literature.
My Project
Our classroom has been lucky to receive a large donation of books from DonorsChoose and our community. We currently have only one small bookshelf to accommodate over 200 books! One corner of our classroom is being taken up by boxes and bags filled with novels that students have to dig through. Many times we don't know who takes what or when (which is fine!! we love that our students are readers!). However, it does not promote an environment of learning or organization when things look a mess. When the classroom library is organized, there is a higher level of respect for the literature that they choose, for the books themselves, and for the classroom.
This project will change the physical layout of our classroom to promote literacy and showcase the hundreds of books that our community has donated.
In this classroom, we read daily. It is important for my students to SEE visually that we value the integrity of the materials we are given and the classroom space. I truly believe that we are learning first with our eyes. My students are watching!! Not only ME, but my classroom. I know that when they walk in and finally SEE these books displayed all around us, even my most reluctant readers won't be able to resist!
