As a group of students in a low-income/high poverty area, many of my students face challenges each day not only at school but also at home. Regardless of their struggles these students strive to be the best leaders they can each and every day. It is my goal to make the most of their experience in my classroom by providing them with everyday items, creating areas of comfort within the classroom, and supplying activities that will extend their learning and creativity in more ways that general lessons.
These students were severely impacted by Hurricane Florence and have had a non-traditional start to the school year.
After just 10 days of school, students spent 52 calendar days out of school due to the effects of the hurricane on our local area. Despite varying levels of destruction all students were impacted in their personal life, whether it was minimal damage to their house or a complete loss of their home. Through these hurdles students still support each other and make it their own personal goal to help each other succeed within our classroom. In order to succeed these lively, creative, and loving students need materials that will fit their own unique needs.
My Project
It is proven that students who enjoys the topic of their book will read more in depth and are more likely to complete the book. In a low income school such as ours, students are often performing at least one grade level lower than their assigned grade. By introducing higher interest books to students we can continue to close the gaps that these students have.
With hands on models and materials students will have the opportunity to expand their creative thinking skills.
We will use these materials in many different projects within the science classroom allowing us to retain more of the information being taught and to engage our learners.
