My students need lots of books in Spanish, fiction and non-fiction, to build our classroom library. They also need journals to keep growing as writers.
Budding readers need lots of books to capture their attention and their imaginations. Only when they find a book that grabs at them will they spend enough time to improve their reading skills. Our classroom library is so small that it doesn't currently meet the students' needs.
We are part of an excellent dual immersion Spanish/English school in California.
This is my first year at this school, and I am working hard to build up the classroom literacy supplies.
My first graders are smart, sweet, and energetic children. The youngest is 5 years old and the oldest is 7. I want to hook them into reading by making it irresistible to cuddle up with a book on the rug. They want to read! But we don't have enough Spanish books on hand to meet their needs.
My Project
My focus as a first grade teacher is on literacy development: reading, writing and comprehension.
This project will bring 43 new Spanish books into our classroom library. There is a mix of fiction and non-fiction books that appeal to a broad range of interests. We will be able to use these books during recreational reading, science and social studies modules.
The more kids read, the more they know. The more they know, the more they can write about. In our classroom, we capture the children's writing in journals. At the rate we are going, our current journals will not last the whole academic year. We need one journal for every child to be able to continue developing their writing skills.
I am ready to teach.
My students are ready to learn. Parents are helping at home. Please help us buttress our classroom resources in order to raise a new crop of avid readers and writers. Thank you!
