We are a Title 1 school, where approximately 70% of students receive free / reduced-price lunch. I am a reading specialist that works with struggling readers. In addition to teaching the basics, I want to instill a love of reading into my students. I work with students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 who are not reading at grade level.
These struggling readers are often overwhelmed and discouraged about reading in general.
Reading is not typically viewed as a pleasurable activity. I work hard to build students' skills while also increasing motivation and excitement.
My Project
My students need manipulatives to make literacy fun. Recently I have begun pulling two separate skill groups of students into my room at the same time in grades 1-3, in order to meet the individual needs of each student. Students spend some of their time receiving direct instruction from me, and some of their time working on independently or in small groups on activities that support the skills we are practicing. I am asking for a variety of literacy manipulatives and resources including a complete set of Phonics Instant Learning Centers, some Hear Myself Sound Phones, a set of Giant Alphabet Beads, a set of Lace-A-Word Lowercase Beads, some 1-Minute Sand Timers, puzzles and Alphabet Stamps.
My students will be able use these materials, like alphabet stampers, to practice their phonics skills in fun and creative ways that they will enjoy.
This will increase their engagement and by using multiple modalities, students will be more likely to retain what they are learning.
In order to keep these new materials, along with other materials I've gathered, safe and organized, I am asking for waterproof, dust proof storage containers.
