I work with students who are struggling to master their reading skills. These students are often overlooked because they are not the most successful or neediest students. The girls will have a sense of community, which should give them more self-confidence.
This lunch group will provide additional support for reading as well as social-emotional growth.
This project will be targeting 10 4th grade girls who have good attendance at school and homework completion. The school serves students who have high mobility and 80% poverty.
My Project
The books I am requesting will go to 10 4th grade girls. These girls are part of reading groups funded by Title 1. These students struggle with reading and will be given additional support.
Literacy Lunch Ladies will meet once a week during lunch and recess time to read a book that focuses on problems that face pre-teen girls today.
After reading the book, we will discuss ways to resolve the problems we had read about. Problems may include friend drama, parental problems, getting along with classmates you don’t like, peer pressure and many other important issues. The girls chosen for this group will be ones that are typically overlooked by their peers and may not always fit into a group. The girls will be required to have good attendance at school and homework completion. This will be a fluid group to allow for students to be added or dropped due to student mobility, need, or a student choosing to no longer participate. Addition girls will be asked to join when a slot becomes open.
