Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a self-contained 6th grade teacher, I try to create a classroom environment that is conducive to teaching literacy, math, and social studies. Particularly with literacy, it's important to have a designated classroom location where students can read comfortably so that they're not constantly planted in their rigid chairs. In fact, our city curriculum mandates that we do a read aloud each day on our classroom rug.
However, my school has left me with a classroom library in which my rug has been passed down over several years, is scarred with various stains, and dried gum. The floors themselves are cold, hard, and unwelcoming. Old linoleum floors are not the most welcoming and comforting spot to a 6th grader's eyes when they sit down to read.
This has led me to buy smaller rugs to help make our library space seem more respectable, but there is still a great deal that needs to be done.
A classroom filled with cushions and a couple of comfortable chairs would not only provide a more accommodating space for my students, but it will also be a tool to motivate many of my reluctant readers. Presented with a renewed classroom environment, my students will undoubtedly be reinvigorated during our reading block. Many of my students entered the school year reading far below grade-level. They are easily distracted and need a great deal of assistance. A comfortable classroom environment will help lay a foundation to raise their interest in reading and allow me to support their needs. Students should not be forced to sit on an old, patched-up rug on top of hard floor but rather given a serene and comfortable setting each day during school.
