This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a special education teacher who works with at-risk students within an urban school district. Very few resources are available to my students that allows them to interact with text at their varying ability levels. Regardless of the socio-economic challenges my students may face, they are excited to come into my classroom and explore different ideas and concepts. My students enjoy using manipulatives, reading various genres and collaborating with their peers. By providing reading materials at varying ability levels and a classroom community that is organized and inviting, my students will feel motivated to learn, share ideas with their peers, and become critical thinkers. Providing designated areas within the classroom with flexible seating will support my students with feeling comfortable and creating a safe and productive environment to explore different activities.
Creating a classroom library that is inviting will support my students learning and appreciation for literature.
My Project
My project consists of high interest reading materials that will engage my students to embrace vocabulary and text of different genres. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series is a high-interest novel that will engage the most reluctant reader and offer gateways for students to explore other fiction and nonfiction books. The nonfiction comprehension test prep offer students with interesting passages as well as comprehension questions to assess their understanding of the text.
Improving vocabulary and language skills produces students who are able to think critically about text.
Practice With Prefixes, Grades 5-8 will assist students with developing vocabulary and improving reading fluency.
