Celebrate Black Teachers and Students
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
As a literacy teacher serving primarily in kindergarten, I would like to have books available for the students to read books of their own choosing. Having the books available would increase fluency levels as well as foster a love for reading that the students would carry through to their adult life. In the library I would like to include Accelerated Reader books as well as books that are of a personal interest to the students.
The students I work with come from mostly low income or one parent families. A moderate percentage of the students are from the local shelter for the homeless. These children typically do not have the opportunity to go to the library or visit other cultural places of interest that other children have. Therefore a classroom library would benefit them greatly.
