Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work as a reading intervention teacher with kindergarten and first grade in a small, farm-working community. My class embraces a children who have a variety of mixed abilities, interests, and goals. As soon as the year starts, students are already learning to read, write, and count, while others are learning to imitate sounds or hold a pencil. The majority of my first grade students spent most of their kindergarten year in front of a screen. This in itself made a transition to in-person instruction a bit difficult. My job is to give individualized literary instruction for those kiddos who are exceptionally behind in comparison to their peers in the same grade level.
In this class, we embrace diversity, curiosity, enthusiasm, and creativity; We build a community around growth mindset and being proud of who we are.
My classroom focuses on celebrating individual goals. Therefore, the work we do in this classroom prioritizes building relationships, self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, self-discovery, and a love for literacy!
My Project
These materials will be used in an intervention classroom for grades K-1. They will be utilized in literacy centers to help students explore and learn through hands-on learning. Each center will explore a different area of phonological awareness, helping student learn all of their letters and sounds and (ultimately) read!
Literacy centers offer meaningful learning experiences where students work independently or collaboratively to meet literacy goals.
Having these materials will also make learning a lot more fun and engaging for students who live in a low socioeconomic area where literacy tends to be very low. Making learning engaging and fun is essential to helping these students meet their literary goals. These materials will help strengthen their love for learning at this age.
