This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My name is Melinda Rowe. My school is 100 percent free lunch and breakfast. The majority of the students are low socio economic status and 98 percent minority. I teach first grade and I have 23 students ( 3 Hispanic, 1 Caucasian, 19 African American). I teach Math, Science, Language Arts, Literacy, and Social Studies.
Most of my kids do not have access to books at home and it is a struggle to build literacy skills when children do not have access to books.
About 80 percent of my kids read at a Pre-kindergarten level. Having access to books at home will help my students increase their literacy skills and intern help them succeed in life.
My Project
Many students that come from low income households have low literacy because they lack access to resources at home. By funding this project you will give hope to the students who really want to read. Sight word practice books will help them build their sight word knowledge at home without the help of adults. The parent handouts will help parents who do not have knowledge help their children build their literacy skills as well.
These students need the literacy skills to succeed in life.
The Scholastic Magazine subscription will go home with students to practice their reading and literacy skills. Many of my children do not have books at home or internet access to read free books online. Without the skills and access to books many of the kids will drop out of high school and not continue their education.
