I am a fifth grade teacher at Community Academy, a charter school in NW DC. While I teach fifth grade, I also work with the fourth grade students for reading. Both my fifth grade and fourth grade classes could benefit from materials to help them improve their reading. We work in centers during reading which means that the students work collaboratively in small groups, rotating activities. This allows me to work with small groups of students while the other students are engaged in other learning activities. I need your help with these activities! I would like my students to be able to learn to love literacy in the way we all carry it with us later in life. We curl up with a good book; we don't sit in a school chair! We play Scrabble with our friends; we don't complete vocabulary worksheets. We read the morning newspaper, comics, and fill out crosswords! And we go to coffee shops and bookstores to listen to poets and authors read work! I want my students to be involved in authentic reading activities that will keep them involved and focused while at the same time improve their reading. To do so, I would like to have pillows to use in my library corner to create a warmer atmosphere. I would like to have scrabble, boggle, and other literacy-focused games so that my students can play games to increase their vocabulary and spelling skills. In the same manner, I would like to have the resources to have a listening center so that groups of students can listen to a stories on tape/CD. Please help my classes experience the joy of literacy. With these resources reading is transformed from the school subject into a joy in life!
