Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a bright and cheerful group of sixth graders learning the ins and outs of Language Arts. Many of them are below grade level when it comes to reading and writing, and need encouragement to improve in these critical areas. This adds a challenge of needing a wide range of materials that the school can't always provide.
The majority of these students are English Language Learners, from low income families.
They are provided with one hundred percent free or reduced price lunch. They crave a wide range of activities to show them that learning can be a wonderful experience.
My Project
Reading and writing is a daunting task for struggling students. Many of these students have trouble engaging with the material and will fall further behind. I intend to create a cheerful space for reading by designing an intriguing bookshelf for our classroom library and using a colorful rug and comfortable chair to encourage independent reading and exploration. The furniture in our room has been handed down from many teachers and it shows its age. I want to brighten it up with the colorful contact paper to bring life into our classroom. In an effort to help students relax while reading, an infuser will help students through aromatherapy. Lavender has been known to create a relaxing environment while peppermint helps with recollection.
We are a low-income school, but our classroom shouldn't be.
It is important for students to come into an educational environment and feel wanted. Students will find more success in a classroom that brightens their lives and makes them happier the moment they walk in. I want to improve our classroom so that my students and I can be proud to be in there learning.
