Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Seventeen energetic boys and six hard working girls love to learn in our public school on the Southwest Side of Chicago. We have so many material needs in order to level the playing field so as to compete with more affluent schools. Our school serves 93.7% Hispanic students, and 90.1% come from low income families. The students all eat breakfast together every morning, then meet on the rug to begin our seven hour daily adventure in word work, math, science, social studies, music and PLAY!
In the past, I have taught many of my Kindergartener's brothers and sisters, and even some of their mothers, aunts, and uncles!
In the morning I wake up, jump out of bed and can't wait to teach them each and every day!
My Project
My students are growing up in an era unlike any, even their older siblings ever encountered. The digital age is upon us. Some of my children tell me they do not even have any toys. Their parents hand them a tablet to entertain, and even try to educate them.
My little learners need bold inspiration to become interested in the beauty of BOOKS!
We would adore a library of Pop-Up books, that I would organize by readability and genre so that we could set up a weekly routine of sharing a world where the images capture their imaginations, and the words begin to entice them.
My plan is to institute a weekly pop-up read aloud. The Kindergarteners would all look forward to it. We would gather on the rug and "ooh," and "aahh" as I turn each page and the images reach our from the book toward the students in order to illustrate the story.
We have asked for a collection ranging from simple "ABC," and "1,2,3" books to elaborate volumes such as "Beauty & the Beast: A Pop-up Book of the Classic Fairy Tale." Many of the books pertain to Units I teach such as, "In the Butterfly Garden,"and "My Best Pop-up Space Book." There are also Pop-up books illustrating the four seasons, which little ones are just beginning to comprehend.
I want to encourage the children to talk to their friends about each book, and then draw and write about them. We can create a folder with all our reflections and monitor our artistic and literacy growth throughout the year. Eventually, we will learn some folding, and tab techniques to try to make some mini pop-up books of our own.
I am sure this undertaking will inspire other projects we have not even yet dreamed of.
