Mrs. Hayden from Saint Paul MN is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Literacy is the Name of the Game!

Help me give my students books to put in their hands to read, read, read! Our school goal is to increase students' reading levels 2-3 grades by the end of the year and we are searching for books!

My Students

My students come from a high poverty area. Approximately 90% of our student population qualifies for free and reduced lunches which has given our school a Title I designation. Because of the high poverty, the access that these students have to materials such as new books is minimal at best.

My school focuses on college readiness, and as a result, many students are attending post secondary institutions by their junior year!

In English class our focus is always on creating, questioning, doing, and experiencing--much of which they cannot afford to do if not through school.

Additionally, students know of very limited places where they can find resources that will help them develop as readers and writers. Our students have an amazing knack for technology, but little to guide them on how to use it to LEARN.

My Project

Our school has a goal to increase reading levels using the program Action 100, which requires students to read 1 hour a day. Students count their reading in Steps (1 step is 15 minutes). They read 2 steps during school hours and 2 steps at home every day.

Many of our students do not have the resources or books at home to read the required amount, so they check out books at school.

With this new requirement, teachers are looking everywhere they can for new and used books in a variety of genres. Help us fund books for our students!
