Imagine not being able to read the simple instructions on a bag of popcorn. Or, how about not understanding what is written on the blackboard because your vocabulary is too limited? I am a ninth-grade Literacy Skills teacher at Harry S. Truman High School in the Bronx. During the 2005-2006 school year I will teach almost 170 students and they all read far below grade level. These students have two English classes: Literacy Skills and English 1. The Literacy Skills class is where their most basic skills as readers will be nurtured and expanded. Learning to read can be very difficult when there are limited materials. I am determined to increase my students' reading levels. To do so, I would like to use the DROP EVERYTHING AND READ (DEAR) program to allow for reading groups in the classroom. However, we need books that are written for struggling readers in order to avoid frustrating the students because the vocabulary is too difficult. Moreover, we need multiple copies of books as well as audiobooks for those students who may have visual or learning disabilities. I would like to challenge my students to read and discuss at least ten books over the course of the year. The READ 180 Fact & Fiction Book Collection is just what we need. This collection offers interesting and fun books for struggling readers. Better yet, there are multiple copies of the books so that students can read with friends and discuss the events of these well-written novels. I believe that every one of my students can become active readers if they are provided with the necessary materials. They already have a teacher who cares and the desire to succeed; now they need the materials to foster their drive.
