Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At our school, we have a quote that we often share with students to describe the classrooms within our walls. It states, "This is the room that has the kids who want to learn to read more books to build a better tomorrow."
One of the greatest challenges my 6th grade students face is that the incredible pressure of meeting standards on annual state tests is creating incredible resistance to reading in the students who need to be reading the most.
An increased focus on test scores has prevented many of my students from discovering books that they truly love--books that will allow them to develop a lifelong love of reading. My students are passionate, inquisitive, and joyful; however, the majority of my students entered our school, on average, at least three years below grade-level in reading last year, hindering their love for reading. In addition to focusing on teaching crucial skills that will allow my students to succeed on our state tests, I am working to cultivate an independent love of reading within each of my students this year, a love of literacy that they can carry with them to and through college.
My Project
The Alliance for Excellent Education points to nearly 24 million students who struggle to read their textbooks in the classroom setting. Of these 24 million struggling students, nearly 3,000 struggling readers will drop out of school every single day. This will not be the story of my students. As a believer in the power of literacy as the most powerful equalizer in our society, it is my responsibility to strengthen my students' abilities to interact with challenging and engaging texts while promoting a love of learning. In my classroom this year and in years to come, students must be reading books that interest them and books that they choose on a daily basis.
Katherine Patterson stated, "It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading--something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own." This brings me to the DonorsChoose community.
Literacy is freedom, and your help in building a library of high-interest novels for my classroom will allow 120 students to read something they enjoy every single day.
