Literacy is Cool, Building Lifelong Literacy Lovers
My students need a variety of high-interest novels, including Stormbringers, We are All Made of Molecules, and the first two books in the City of Ember series.
It always seems to be that being smart is not "cool." It is a teacher's job to combat that stigma and encourage students to embrace their "coolness." Creating a lifelong love of literacy in the classroom combats this stigma. It is my goal to make literacy 'cool' through embracing reading in class.
They come from a variety of socio-economical and racial backgrounds and academic levels.
In my classroom specifically, I teach 8th grade English. My students have a variety of academic needs, ranging from IEP and ELL students to students that are far above grade level.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of fiction novels including Stormbringers, We are All Made of Molecules, and the first two books in the City of Ember series to help build my classroom library. I strongly believe that in an English classroom students should have ready access to all genres of books. By just having novels in the classroom, students see that a literary environment is being fostered. My students will have time each day to independently read a book of their choosing. Having novels accessible in the classroom allows students more time to read by not having to go to the library to select a book each time. By setting aside time each day in class to read, my students learn how important reading is in their every day lives and how much of a positive impact it can have on their grades in every class, not just English, as strong literacy skills are a key component to succeeding academically.
Donating to my classroom library will help create a literary environment in my classroom, help students learn to love reading, and help them become more successful academically.
