My students need more experiences with books and being read to. I would like to start a family lending library for the families in my classroom. This will assist in embedding learning opportunities in the home.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in an inner city school district in an integrated Pre-K classroom. One hundred percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many receive backpack food for the weekend. Our school runs a food pantry once a month and provides coats to any child in need during winter months. My students are creative, curious and very active.
Although many of our students face challenges, I am confident I can motivate my students to be life long learners.
I am looking to further engage my students through adding additional tools, resources and experiences to my tool belt.
My Project
I would like to start a lending library for my families by providing a variety of famous picture books such as Pete The Cat I Love My White Shoes, The Napping House, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Studies show students that are read to each day for twenty minutes grow to be successful readers.
I want to give my students the opportunity and resources to sit down and enjoy some of my favorite books with a family member.
I am committed to providing my students with a rich literacy environment that will provide them with many opportunities to grow in their love for reading. I will provide hints and tips for families for each book in regard to asking probing questions or how to work on basic concepts. This project will set the foundation for success in early literacy skills in my students lives.
