Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Art to upwards of 200 middle school students a year at a “turnaround” school in Texas. These young adults have strong social and emotional needs largely due to the circumstances of their upbringing and surroundings, which include large amounts of gang violence, broken families, homelessness and poverty, loss of their loved ones and peers due to drugs and suicide - as well as jail and prison time.
“Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.” -Brad Meltzer
As their art teacher, I want to do everything I can to provide a safe space for my students to explore their social and emotional needs through art making in whatever way speaks to them the most; with your help, this will be possible.
My Project
With 89.6% of our students considered At-risk, 89.8% Economically disadvantaged and 32.8% Limited English proficiency, a classroom library would benefit my students in so many ways. I want my students to see and be exposed to all different art forms as an expression of self, including reading and writing.
“Reading is dreaming with open eyes.” - Anissa Trisdianty
I plan on using the books as a way to open a dialogue about how to overcome situations and thrive despite all odds, prompt personal writing and art projects as well as promote the importance of literacy in all subjects and life.
