Help me give my students the ability to connect reading with STEM. This will provide our classroom with the ability to connect STEM concepts with read alouds to deepen student interest!
I teach STEM in a low-income school system from kindergarten to sixth grade as a specials class. Students live in Elwood, Indiana and this is normally the first exposure to STEM concepts. Students are always excited about learning in STEM. Many ask what they will be doing today as soon as they walk in the door. Students whether they have special needs or not come into the STEM class. They are exposed to these concepts no matter their level.
Students need exposure to STEM concepts whether they are going to be an engineer or not to become well rounded individuals.
This makes them well rounded community members in the future and gives them knowledge of various professions that they may be overwhelmed by if not exposed to STEM concepts. Every student doesn't learn from traditional methods; these students may never be on a sports team, but they are challenging themselves in a different way. Students strive to do better in order to learn and explore with STEM concepts. Students’ minds are changing and opening to new ideas and STEM concepts. They see a reason for learning and find enjoyment in it at the same time.
My Project
Students will be exposed to STEM concepts through literacy. They will start off with a book that is connected to not only the lesson, but STEM. Students will then be able to deepen their understanding of the concepts by not only hearing the concept but also applying it through an activity.
Students will not only be exposed to STEM concepts, but they will be exposed to literacy concepts as well.
This will occur through the reading of the book and then applying skills. The books and lessons are from NSTA (National Science Teaching Association) which guarantee that concepts and reading are not only age appropriate but have been looked over by numerous educators and experts.
