My Students

My students are from a lower income military area. Most kids are related to someone or know someone who works in the military or specifically at Robins Air Force base. Many students walk or ride bikes to and from school. Many put in the effort to do the extra curricular activities that interest them but sometimes need more motivation to complete and be interested in their academic subjects. My students are mostly African American students and Hispanic and Latino students with a small percentage of White and other nationalities mixed in. My students like to make artwork on contemporary subjects that relate to their interests like music and sports.

My Project

My students are in a bracket where they tend to be struggling readers. While we do have extra reading curricular, I want to introduce reading into my own art classroom as well with relevant and relative content for my students. Sometimes it is hard for students to make the connections between things that are important to them and subjects commonly covered in art. With these magazines I can introduce a more inclusive and present presence within my classroom. My students can read and create lessons on artwork and artist who are relevant to their time, their interest, their heritage, and their concerns. My middle schoolers are developing their own sense of drive and interests as individuals. I believe that reading about artwork and artist can help to inspire them to go above and beyond and capture their dreams.
