Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine your first attempts at learning how to read! Now imagine the days your parents or loved ones sat and read a book to you. Listening to someone read is exciting and extremely motivating for students to learn how to read themselves. This project will help my students become readers.
My students are joyfully engaged during read-aloud time each day in my classroom, yet lack the basic reading skills necessary to read independently.
Books capture their imaginations, but sitting with a book face-to-face becomes discouraging for many.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds but unfortunately haven't had the excellent Pre-K and kinder education that you may have had yourself. Our school only serves grades 1-5, with Pre-K and Kinder at an alternate site. This situation, coupled with a low-income background, makes first grade a difficult adjustment. Many students' reading abilities fall far below the norm for students entering first grade.
My students are active and interested in hands-on, engaging learning. Our school is striving to overcome the odds of our neighborhood and early childhood schooling to give our best to all of our students each and every day.
My Project
Books on CD, "Listen, Read & Rhyme with Dr. Seuss" and headphones will help our students grow as learners and as readers. These items will help me as a teacher by allowing me to set up independent work stations while I conduct reading groups. Meaningful independent workstations will allow my students to grow as readers while giving me the opportunity to work closely with a few other students.
This project is so important because our children deserve it.
They deserve the best education that we can give them. These materials will help provide that by giving them meaningful opportunities to experience great literature, while learning to read, expanding their fluency, and increasing their interest in reading overall.
