My students need a kidney table for small group instruction in reading and writing. The nonfiction books are needed to aid students in developing more complex thinking.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The day starts with a Daily Oral Language where students practice grammar and phonics. This is followed by reading workshop where the students read individually, as partners, and in small groups. Writing workshop follows which includes 4 different engaging writing activities for students.
I work in a diverse urban school where over 8 different languages are spoken.
Most of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many students do not have English language support at home and do not have exposure to leveled nonfiction reading books. My students love school and love to read all kinds of books.
The kidney table will be used for small group guided reading support and small group writing and phonics instruction. Exposing my students to a variety of motivating nonfiction texts that are challenging will improve their ability to read and understand more complex text. The illustrations and the factual text will also give my students information in a straight forward, easy to understand way. The books will allow for plenty of oral and reading activities to help close some of the reading gaps, especially for my English language learners.
The donations for this project will improve my classroom because it will not only stimulate them to read more books it will also increase their self-confidence and motivation for learning.
The kidney will allow me to reach many of my struggling students through small group instruction.
