Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Kindergarten teacher in a low-income, Title I school district, I have noticed that my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. For example, most of the students I teach receive free or reduced-rate lunch and breakfast, and through a special program at my school several students and their families also receive additional support through bags of food, backpacks and clothing.
Despite the many challenges my students face, they always come to school eager to learn!
Although my students show an eagerness to learn, sometimes it can be redundant using the same literacy games and tasks for students to practice certain phonemic awareness skills.
My Project
Daily, my students participate in literacy instruction, which consists of time spent working on phonics and phonemic awareness. These are critical skills needed to become strong readers and writers. They need to practice these skills in a way that excites them and seems like play rather than work. Each of the items listed in this project will take my students beyond paper and pencil to make learning engaging and fun!
In Kindergarten students build a strong foundation of reading skills, like phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency and comprehension.
Some of these skills take a lot of practice before mastery, which can be tedious and sometimes overwhelming. The literacy games chosen for this project will encourage my students to practice such critical skills and in turn become better readers. For example, the several instant learning centers picked for this project will help students to isolate initial, medial and final phonemes in words. When students become successful with isolating phonemes they can apply what they have learned and move on to blending and building words with the word building center. I belive that these games and manipulatives will give my students the confidence to enter the 'world of reading' with passion and excitement. I thank you in advance for any donation you might make in order for this project to become a reality!
