Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The population I serve has a high poverty rate. About 99% of my students receive free or reduced price lunch and about 95% are English Language Learners. Many of the students receive backpack weekend lunches. They sometimes receive dental and optometrist services through our school nurse and school sponsors.
Regardless of the obstacles facing my students and the labels placed on them, they are more than these challenges---much more.
They are loving, compassionate, and eager to learn. They are problem solvers, mathematicians, readers, writers, and dreamers. They are full of hope and desire to better themselves.
My students arrive with a positive attitude to an environment that does not readily support their native language, but appreciates and embraces their customs and backgrounds. They are breaking through stigmas, labels, and barriers because, as a school system, we believe our students can accomplish more.
My Project
The leveled emergent texts are the tools I need to help my students be successful in literacy.
The project I posted is dedicated to help my students build a strong foundation in literacy and a love for reading.
A few skills these books target are letter sound relationships, phonetic awareness, and spelling/reading patterns. As my student master and progress in their reading, the varied selection will help my students be engaged as they work on different skills and build on new ones. This is why I selected reading books in the A-F leveled range and in different genres fiction, nonfiction and comics.
Students need tangible books in their hands in order to learn these skills.
